BMW S54 (or [S54B32]), as in the e46 M3, M coupe, and M roadster
Probably the most advanced BMW I6 engine, BMW was criticized for ending manufacturing (in favor of the shorter V8-s). Fully supported by VEMS (order with proper options, see below).
3.2 liter Dual VANOS, Individual Throttle Body, 333(US)/338(EU)bhp factory spec.
- Cylinder bore: 87 mm
- Displacement of 3,246 cc
- High pressure Double VANOS continuously variable valve timing system with faster operation at high rpm
- Compression 11.5:1
- Finger-type rocker arms for reduced reciprocating mass and friction
- One-piece aluminum head casting for lighter weight
- Scavenging oil pump to maintain pressure during heavy cornering
VEMS ECU Config:
BMW S54 dual-VANOS engine: VR, HALL, HALL + 4 * PFET high-side switches for the 4 hydraulic cam-actuator solenoids
- There are 3 engine speed sensors. One on the crank (VR) and one on each camshaft (HALL), so order ECU with 3 trigger inputs
- order ECU with 4 PFET high side drivers for the camshaft solenoids since they require switched 12V, not switched GND like traditionally run solenoids.
- 8 IGBT recommended
- 2nd RS232 might be useful, eg aim=>CAN setup for BmwCanEFortySix
- ETC (DBW drive by wire Electronic Throttle Control) supported, all the usual things apply:
- read VT help
- ETC is for careful, experienced installers. Understand the concept and details, create your page from MembersPage , configure with safety relay, check the margins, ...
Piggyback install
One might choose to make install simpler, taking over fuel/spark/air/controls completely, but keep the factory ECU
- to satisfy dash and air conditioner (CAN-bus)
The factory ECU shares the following inputs with VEMS ECU:
primtrig crankshaft VR sensor
- Sharing primtrig VR causes loss of RPM signal on VEMS side at 6500rpm (Rija Robinson)
- with standard 18k primtrig VR pullup ?
- VR sensor resistance ? VR DC voltage measured (ign on, engine NOT running) ?
- Is it related to primtrig VR DC bias ? (too high DC voltage perhaps ?) The VR signal is not going below 0mV at high RPM ? That is a bit unusual. Do we have chance to Oscilloscope the signal ?
- GND (of course)
- +12V power
- CLT
- order "VEMS ECU without CLT pullup" (2k7 pullup to +5V can be easily installed later if the factory ECU is removed)
- MAT ? (VEMS needs it, perhaps the factory ECU does not need it ?
- If factory ECU needs MAT: order "VEMS ECU without MAT pullup" (2k7 pullup to +5V can be easily installed any time)
