Dave's BMW E30 Turbo
Started out as an 1988 BMW E30 327i (stroker using super ETA bottom end, with a 325i head), stock everything else for now.
While N/A:
Using a VEMS V3.3 ECU, stock 60-2 wheel and CLT temp sensor, IAT from a VW, and a TPS from a 5/7 series automatic BMW. Using original engine wire harness.
Running 19# high-z injectors.
ECU running Firmware version 1.0.71
Update May. 22 2008
The BMW is now turbo. I decided to remake the entire wiring harness for the motor. The old harness was pulled and stripped down to the bare minimum for the remaining functions (starter, alt, clt gauge for cluster, etc). A new engine harness was then made with all necessary (and new) options.
- Current configuration
- CS: Stock 60-2 Wheel and VR sensor
- Cam sync: Custom made using a magnet and hall sensor from an early VW VR6.
- Injectors: 6x Flow matched 620cc High-Z
- Ignition: Stock VR6 coilpack
- TPS: Automatic M30 TPS sensor
- CLT: Stock BMW Coolant sensor
- IAT: VW VR6 IAT (Bosch)
- IAC: Stock BMW 3 wire unit. Pin #1 - Stepper A, Pin #2 - 12VDC, Pin #3 - Stepper B
- Knock: Knock sensor mounted to a custom bolt located at the back of the block just under the head by cyl. #6 Will not be used for tuning. If knock sensor can be tuned properly (by using det cans for accuracy) will be used as a safety measure in case of a bad tank of gas)
- Launch Control: Analog Input (ch 5 - EC18-16).
Went and did some tuning and came back with... 374whp @ 18psi on 91 octane (on a very hot and humid day)
Sept 18 2008 - Injector driver issue
Having major problems with the ECU! Two days ago injector driver 1 blew. Just today injector driver 6 went. The car runs fine. The tune hasn't been changed at all. What could be causing random injector drivers to fail like this?
- I know it's dumb, but are your flyback connections OK?
- Not dumb at all actually... I check that yesterday... Although I couldn't see or measure anything wrong with a DVM... I decided to cut out the diode and put in a new one... Been good since then! Thanks for the suggestion though.
- Obviously false alarm, blew another injector driver tonight. #6 again... this is not good at all... anyone have suggestions? It also seems like there is a backfire at the time that this all happens and after that the inj. driver is dead and it's flooding the cyl.
- CHECK YOUR ANALOG GROUND! CHANGE THE WIRE. THAT WILL BE THE PROBLEM! --FERO
- Thank you I will check that today!
- Update on problem... I removed the analog input and all is well after replacing the INJ drivers that were burnt. Thanks again for the insight!
- Thank you I will check that today!

Oct. 17 2008 - Injector drivers are randomly blowing again
So we decided to connect to another input on ch 7 - EC18-12 with a clean ground for pull down, using a 2K4 5V pull up as usual. Everything was fine (LC working, car running strong) for about 2 weeks. Now just today again Cyl. no. 2 injector driver blew. The car was being driven hard but LC was not being used at all or at anytime during the day.
I'm starting to wonder if there is a problem with the ECU, or a setting for the injectors?
PWMing is disabled due to the use of TS diode. Maybe there is an issue using the TS diode with the old high power/PWM flyback setup?
What do I need to check? I will upload the config tomorrow for review, but I highly doubt there is an issue in the config as nothing has changed in the ECU (FW, CONFIG and TABLES are all the since ever since the car was started and tuned on the 630cc injectors well over 10 months ago).
The problems with the injector drivers only started to show up approx. 1 month ago.
Any other suggestions on what I can check?
- CHECK YOUR ANALOG GROUND! CHANGE THE WIRE. THAT WILL BE THE PROBLEM!- I MEAN CHANGE THE GROUND WIRE OF THE EC36 PIN26 FOR A NEW ONE!!! --FERO
- I did change it... the last time you told me to... This is a new/clean ground wire for the pulldown. And like I said the LC wasn't used at all that day or when it happened. Which means the ground signal wasn't going to the ECU. We are using a different switch as well.
- The LC grounding does not makes a sense here. But if the grounding of the EC36 pin26 is bad, than you'll blew off the FETs. So you have to recheck that wire, or simply change it to a new one! --FERO
- Wellw hat I've done for now is disconnect the pulldown for the LC. And I will inspect and change the ground for EC36-26, it is possible maybe the crimp/wire is bad. I already had this with the primary VR trigger (and this was a unterminated harness from the webshop). Thanks for the help! I will post my findings :)
