Debugging an installation
Emil sold a VEMS v3.3 to a Porsche owner who later destroyed his engine and sold the box to Daniel Lindgren in Piteå, Sweden. He is trying to get it running with a Volvo 5 cyl turbo engine. The box was sent to me for a slight upgrade, a change from Hall to VR primary trigger. Other than that I also replaced the power flyback board that was installed on this board with a bi-directional 30V TS diode. The diode was decided upon after consulting with Marcell as I normally would've used a uni-directional TS diode, but it should be ok - but still this is one of those things that is different about anything I've been involved in.
He rebuilt the original harness and made a mistake :
- +12V went to the original TPS and now was led into the TPS input channel
- Bad wiring of the VR sensor
Those two were both fixed and the engine started up fine. Shortly after startup the engine stopped running and three (3) injector FETs were constantly grounding. One could point to several things:
- Flyback cable came loose (was very secure)
- Poor grounding (done like in Phatbobs guide)
- +12 Volt fed to the TPS input channel (protected by default)
- .. anything else?
- the "initial" +12 Volt fed to the ADC chip (mcp3208) can damage several other things, yes
- TPS input channel (which has protection, than goes to processor, not to the ADC chip) should never receive +12V, but is unlikely to damage parts
Maybe Emil has some input, both me and him were on the phone with these guys when they started the engine. Obviously FET drivers and/or FETs have to be replaced. Any further information is hard to produce at this point.
