I have an '88 Volkswagen Scirocco
My goals
- To have control over engine management
- Make car reliable (near stock levels?)
- Learn about what makes all these variables work together
- NOT TO BLOW UP THE MOTOR
Car Specs
- Suspension
- Eibach Sportline Springs
- Tokico Shocks and Struts (for now)
- Poly bushings
- Engine
- ABA 2.0l 4 cylinder motor (From OBDI Jetta or Golf)
- PL 16v head (From 1.8l 16v Scirocco)
- Thottlebody with TPS (From automatic Corrado - bolts on)
- Turbo T3 .60/.48 (From ~'84 Ford Thunderbird)
- Gillis boost controller (Manual screw type)
- Intercooler
- Fuel Injection from G60 Corrado (CURRENTLY)
- 48# high z injectors (correct if wrong - high z meaning constant voltage to open is what I am assuming)
- Transmission
- Stock time-bomb
VEMS SETUP
I am going with v3.3 assembled. Here is the current plans, which are subject to many, many changes.
Components
- Sensors
- Intake Air Temperature (IAT)
- GM #25036751
- Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor (MAP)
- 2.5 bar (on board ECM)
- 1 Wideband oxygen sensor (WB02)
- Bosch LSU4
- 1 knock sensor (engine can accept 2, so perhaps I will eventually use 2) - not yet implemented
- Exhaust Gas Temperature sensor (EGT) - not yet implemented
- K Type
- Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)
- From automatic Corrado
- Fuel Pressure Sender - not yet implemented
- Probably the one at the VEMS webstore
- Boost Controller - not yet implemented
- Also through the VEMS webstore
- Intake Air Temperature (IAT)
Ignition and Injection Setup
- Crank trigger from ABA code motor - I won't be using a Hall
- VR std 60-2 VAG wheel on ABA crank. Those using different blocks may have to use external setups. See MembersPage/DerrickScirocco
- Part # 021 907 319 B
- VR std 60-2 VAG wheel on ABA crank. Those using different blocks may have to use external setups. See MembersPage/DerrickScirocco
- Wasted Spark Ignition
- 4 output coilpack from 99 2.0 8v VW - new beetle for sure, AEG engine code (this way I can use my stock plug wires)
- Part # 032 905 106 B
- 4 output coilpack from 99 2.0 8v VW - new beetle for sure, AEG engine code (this way I can use my stock plug wires)
- Sequential Fuel Injection (apparently it's an easy change toggling batch -> sequential, as long as you have the injectors wired separately)
Rewiring after killing an injector wire due to poor wiring
The ECU (which apparently is a v3.2 board has this mod using 0 ohm connections):
WBO2 calibration
- I am only able to get 15.7 AFR on mlp07 with mde02 on to turn on WBO2. does mlp07 show O2% or AFR? I may have misspoke here
- recommended to think in Lambda and O2%, because AFR is a broken unit that should NOT be used
- check mlp00 becuase that shows lambda or O2%
- If the LSU4 sensor is in free air, that is appr 20.95% (IMPORTANT: O2% !!! lambda and AFR would be infinite!)
- If you are using 100 Ohm resistor test, the reading depends on wbo2_calibration, 15.7 AFR or 15.7% O2 (very different) could be OK. Yes - do you think I was looking at O2 or AFR based on the info above?
(IMPORTANT: "pin" below means WBO2 pin not EC18, EC36, DSUB, ...confirmed "pin" means wbo2)
- 100 ohm resistors between pins 1 and 5 / pins 1 and 6
- DVM pin 5 and 6: 0.10v
- are you sure ? Should be 2 x 0.47V (double of what is between pin1 and pin5 : assuming both resistors are 100 Ohm)
- The pin 5 and 6 DVM test is WITHOUT resistors
- DVM pin 5 to ground 4.09v (pump- to GND, OK)
- 100 ohm resistors used for this test
- DVM pins 1 and 5: 0.47v (nernst to pump-, OK)
- 100 ohm resistors used for this test
- pump_pw_zero 0x66
- seems good
- nernstdc 0x85
- seems good. You can try 0x83 or so to push 0.47V down closer to 0.45V
- wbo2_calibration F9
- this is NOT maxed out
- Maxed out is FF, was only showing 16.0. If I was looking at AFR, this this point is worthless
What I find odd (but I can't totally confirm) is I think the calirbation used to be closer to 20.9 (this is O2%, not AFR) when i last did this a couple of months ago. My calibration was never perfect, though.
- sensor calibration is done with sensor in free air. yes this is correct
- Above you have 100 Ohm resistors ! tested at 99ohms
The configs below are current (looks sane).
Correct

Comments
Updated firmware to 1.0.53
what a 17 psi spike?! no wonder 1st gear had no traction.
Problems below have been resolved:
- I can't get the ALS SW indicator to be switched off in MT. The car drives normally, so all seems to be well, but it would be nice to have the indicator off.
- Try to set "Input Channel used" to "old: SDA" under ALS-settings. The channels 0-7 consider 0V as on and +5V as off, that's why they need a pullup-resistor to +5V. Note, this also works for the Launch control inidicator
- Also I am having weird accel enrichment.
- Apparently 0.2ms enrichment duration isn't enough - problem resolved
