Introduction
I am planning to install VEMS on a Fiat/Lancia 5 cyl. 2l 20V engine. Since I have no previous experience with engine management the time frame for this project is pretty much unlimited.
Some data on the engine:
- 5 cylinder, 1998cc, 20V, turbocharged
- Firing order: 1-2-4-5-3
- OEM ECU is a Bosch Motronic M 2.10.4 with a 58+2 (60-2) missing tooth trigger wheel. [1][2]
- VR sensor
- Stock injection timing sensor is a Hall effect sensor, reading off the exhaust camshaft.[3][4]
- Coil-on-plug setup.[5][6]
- Passive coils.
- Fiat VVT, simple variable valve timing system.[7][8]
From what I can tell (which isn't alot) all sensors needed by VEMS is already there (except MAP sensor). Problem seems to be to figure out if they can be used.
- Since almost all components are made by Bosch, there shouldn't be any problem with these sensors
I have two sets of injectors, high impedance Bosch. Standard ones are rated at about 330cc/min@3 bar. The second set is rated at 384cc/min@3 bar.
Questions
- Logic-level outputs (which are 03 and 05 by default in the 6+2 setup) cannot drive passive coils ! Use power outputs to drive passive coils
- eg. h[2]=06 04 02 01 00 05 05 05 (ignition sequence) can be configured (to fire igndrive 0, 1, 2, 4 and 6 respectively), and wire transformers accordingly. See InputTrigger/AudiTrigger for more info on the cyl fire order (which is 360 degree rotated, not 62 BTDC as you might think!)
- ignchmax=04 # nr. of coils -1
- How can I tell what sort of crank trigger sensor is used. The manual only states part no. which havn't helped me alot.
- measure Ohm with DVM. Any combination of pins, in both directions. DVM Diode mode can help too.
- MembersPage/PhatBob - Looking at the trigger wheel info [1] it shows a method to test the resistance (774 - 846 @20degC) and shows a coil in the schematic. This is a VR sensor.
- OEM coil-on-plug setup can most likely be used. Is there a way to find out if they are "active" or not?
- measure Ohm with DVM. Any combination of pins, in both directions. DVM Diode mode can help too.
- MembersPage/PhatBob - The coils shown in [5]are passive coils with a 0.4 ohm primary coil, these will draw ~30A@12V
MembersPage/PhatBob - For the VVT looking at [8] you will need to measure the resistence across the solanoid (1) in the picture, I see that the Motronic ECU drives these through a series of relays, depending on the current draw it may be possible to drive the VVT directly by one of the spare High Current outputs.
MembersPage/EmilMalmsten/AudiS/OldPage is a 5cyl that was running on 60-2 (+ camsync, of course) earlier, before it was converted to InputTrigger/AudiTrigger.
