Next project will consist of installing a S52 engine in my 1990 E30
Engine consists of
3.2 Liter Straight 6
24 Valve, DOHC with VANOS (Variable Intake Timing)
COP Ignition
Will be adding a turbo at the time of installation
This project is in the very early stages

Questions / Issues:
1. The board powers up! and i have LCD and keyboard, and some of the sensors seem to be working properly. Although I'm having an issue with the rs232 port. I confirmed wiring, and even double checked the jumpers on the board - but i still don't have a connection. I'm testing the board using MegaTune. Can somebody offer some suggestions on what to do? replace the maxim chip? Wouldn't the serial port need to be working for initial programming after the bootloader was installed? Thanks!
Solved - for whatever reason, i was able to upgrade the firmware using megaloader and the serial problem was solved.
Hi!
How will you plan to control the VANOS system? In the near future it'd be interesting to many BMW owners. Thanks. ( MembersPage/GergelyLezsak )
I have the vanos soloniod hooked up to the 7th injector output. This engine is single vanos, so it should be as easy as a RPM triggered switch. From what I understand, the dual vanos is more difficult - but i don't know the details on it.
Tahnks! So it's a imple 12V non-pwm solenoid activated above certain (?) RPM? That's seems easy! Do you have some source of factory use of the vanos system? (or logs :)
Thanks.
From here: http://www.bmwworld.com/technology/vanos.htm
Just off idle, the DME energizes a solenoid which allows oil pressure to move that cup gear to advance the cam 12.5 degrees at midrange, and then at about 5000 rpm, it allows it to come back to the original position.
So it seems it's not a simple off-on rpm-based switch, but rather an off-on-off. What would be more interesting is the use of a PWM output from one of the fuel injector outputs to run a double vanos BMW or something like a VW VR6 24V with continously variable cam timing.
- Possible or not?
- theoretically possible, but more idea is needed, preferrably cleanup on MembersPage/JasonVoytilla/BMW/Vanos Unfortunately there are quite a few more important firmware developments in the queue before this.
- simple PWM(RPM) is enough ?
