truck is a 6 cyl. I am firing cop coils and using a distributer mounted 24-1 trigger wheel
Board is a v3.2 serial number=110
- it seems that you assembled the controller yourself, and configured the trigger HW.
- write all related steps you did. Eg. copy from GenBoard/Manual/InputTriggerHardWare the closest match and adjust it to the actually used values. Take note of LM1815pin5 (is the jumper open ? not shorted to either 0V nor 5V)
- it seems that you have installed (/ kept) a pullup resistor on the primary trigger input that results in 5V when nothing is connected to EC36pin27 (2k7 .. 10k pullup is common for HALL setup; 22k or higher or infinite for VR setup). Very easy to measure the pullup value (without opening the box): pull down the EC36pin27 primary trigger input to GND with a resistor (eg. 1k; or any resistor from 100 Ohm .. 10k is fine, just take note; the VR sensor itself is fine - acts as a pullup when installed normally - , just measure resistance) and measure the input voltage. If (as is the case if I understand right,) the problem only effects cranking (when VR voltage is lowest), and it's fine after it starts, this is very likely to be the problem and very easy to fix:
- remove the agressive pullup or replace with a higher value such as 22k .. 100k - this requires opening the controller
- or try a pulldown parallel with the VR sensor (510 Ohm .. 1k can work). - does not require opening the controller but it's not 100% certain that fixes the problem
- try ElectronicDesign/TriggerSignalGenerator (if you have problems, we can make a c006 (even type) or m231 (23+1 = 24-1) type .wav soundfile for you). You can play a .wav that matches the configured trigger and see with some LED-s that configuration and setup is what you expect or not.
- please organize your plans / measurements / descriptions thematically (not chronologically) to reflect the uptodate status (make several pages for totally different setups (like VR or HALL)

Trying an optical trigger now => this requires the controller primary trigger set up for HALL
Have some questions. Went to the local electronics store and picked up an OPB804 optical switch. Built it into this little circuit that I found on the internet
since I have no idea how to do it myself. It works fine on the bench, low reads .27v to gnd when the beam is not blocked and high is 5.09v to ground with the beam blocked. Hook it up to my v3.2 and I get from 3.6v to 4.6v => this confirms the agressive primary-trigger pullup inside your controller
- the input trigger signal line that goes into vems reads 5 V (to gnd) when it isnt attached to anything. Read above how the internal pullup can be measured
I have a feeling the 10k resister needs to go and I just spent all that time building, mounting and sealing it for nothing and need to throw it out and start again, anyone please confirm??
- the 1k resistor limits current (and therefore the outputted infrared light) of the LED. The LED would be damaged by directly connecting 5V to it. However, lower value like 270 Ohm or even 100 ohm (measuring current would be a good idea; or voltage over the LED / over the known resistor) would allow more (infrared) light and opening the phototransitor more => pulling the trigger lower (closer to GND).
- I bought another one and tried without the 10k resistor (=> only the pullup in the controller), makes no difference at all (voltage readings ? Is that still exactly 3.6V or now goes lower ?). Signal doesn't go low enough no matter what. If I disconnect the signal wire only and tap the bare wire together, I can get rpm readings.
BELOW THIS WILL BE SCRAPPED IF OPTICAL TRIGGER WORKS.
