Wont rev past 5000 RPM and my downpipes get red hot at idle (!!!)
- this is usually caused by retarded ignition
- can you verify by strobe that "14 deg BTDC is really at 14 deg BTDC" ?
- perhaps TDC after the trigger value is way too high ?
WARMED UP LOG:

Running POORLY full sequential COP
Hard to start normally but starts quickly with ether spray
- bump up cranking enrichment (at actual temperature. Had to do that yesterday with a 10 Valve audi-100 that had same symptom, started immediately after that)
- perhaps some scaling (RPM based ? Even at low RPM ?) removes most of the cranking enrichment applied ?
- After getting the warm engine, and warmup enrichment tuned, return to the cranking, some final retouches might be needed. It helps a LOT if you take note of the fuel pulsewidth values of good startups (log continuously, and analyze the logs, and make summary, especially of good and best behavior)
I had trouble converting from my 8 year old firmware that ran very well using wasted spark. I somehow kept losing track of the correct required_fuel constant...It would seem to change itself, but was my stupidity in not labeling my config files correctly. ANYWAY, my fuel maps are no longer any good and spark maps is ???? due to many trigger hardware changes and various crazyness with trying to make the car drive temporarily for moving houses and bad money/job changes.
I would love to see a good ABZ config file to figure this out myself, but until somebody responds with that, I hope to get some help. I have to move 1500 miles at end of the month and car is not drivable due to my poor VEMS tuning.
That is a non-agressive NA engine, should be easy to tune speed-density.
- consider starting from scratch config, even from a default config (that has all outputs disabled: adjust those), or from a tuned config from another engine but recent fw (much easier to set outputs and trigger, than to catch some seriously off small scalers/miscorrections lurking in historical config, perhaps not properly upgraded, perhaps several times).
- remember: finetune warm first, than idle, and finally cold and cranking.
- Operational LSU4 sensor helps a lot.
- much easier with 2 persons (1 driving, 1 tuning real-time watching gauges), at least for the warm VE and ign tuning. With 2 persons, engine is often (when otherwise all cylinders running OK) very drivable after 30 mins of warm-tuning.
- later (cold and cranking) 1 person can do it, by logs and adjustments (needs another session to start cold, obviously)
- capture logs all the way, and view them carefully, publish some chosen annotated
Reminder
- tuning VE will not work out if not all cyls are working (spark plugs fouled, or inj or ign problem)
- tuning idle will not work out if VE (or ign) is not tuned
- tuning afterstart enrichment will not work if TPS is not calibrated properly, or if VE is not tuned well
- ...
- if something does not seem to react properly, think about some preconditions that could undermine the effort
