Coil saturation measurements |
After a lot off speculation about my coils dwell time i decided it was time to put the theory to the test. First i measured the coil-packs primairy resistance: both coils have 0.9 Ohm pri. After that i measured the voltage across the coil- and GND (using the wire from v3 to coil als shunt). Surprising results! Coil saturation time turned out to be ~9.8 mS, with a supplied dwell period of 10.4 mS. Battery voltage was 14.63 V [Scopeshot of the experiment] How can this be ??? Well as it turns out modern coils are designed to almost never saturate, the above experiment coild have killed the coil. Therefore i strongly suggest not to try the above experiment with modern type (below 3 Ohm primairy resistance) coils See also: * DummyIgnition page for tips how to safely determane coil dwell values. * [page that inspired me to try it in the first place] ---- Back to: MembersPage/DaveBrul |
