Visit Preferences to set your user name Summary of change: Overview: My name is Karl Buchka. I am a third-year Electrical Engineering student at The University of Massachusetts Amherst. The car is a 1979 Volvo 242 with a 1995 Volvo 850 Turbo engine (B5234T). Some details on the car: * Inline 5-cyl., 2.3l, turbocharged (TD04H-15G), 4 valves per cylinder. The engine is essentially stock, save for a new (OE Volvo) intake manifold and 350cc injectors. At 15psi on the current setup I flow fuel for approximately 250bhp. * VEMS 3.3 will replace the current setup of: MSnS-E 029y4 on a V3 PCB with sequential COP, batch fire injection, boost control, fan control, tacho output, two-step, and a Just Another Wideband (JAW). http://www.vems.hu/files/MembersPage/KarlBuchka/242-beach.jpg ---- '''VEMS Setup:''' Apart from the standard sensors (MAP, CLT, IAT, TPS), I'm planning on setting up the VEMS with the following major functions: * Sequential coil on plug * Sequential injection * Single channel wideband and EGT * Dual channel knocksense * Fan control, boost control, two-step, tacho output, shift-light, 20x4 LCD '''Trigger settings:''' The engine comes from the factory with a 60-2 wheel/VR sensor on the crank and a single tooth wheel/hall sensor on the cam. '''Goals:''' My initial goal with this install is to overcome the limitations of Megasquirt (some of which I have reached, others not), putting me in a much better position to take the car to the next level. Also to have a good time with it, and possibly learn something useful along the way. '''Shopping cart:''' I have just (Sept. 25, 2008) ordered the following from the VEMS shop: *GenBoard v3.3 *Power Flyback - With wire yes *Econoseal36-PCB *Econoseal18-PCB *EconoSeal36-Wire side *Econoseal18-Wire side *Alubos EC frontplate - Drill-count 3 small *Alubos Endplate - Drill-count 4 *Alubos1600 - Drill-count 6 *Ignition driver insulator - Size 2lines *Pneumatic tube *Pneumatic connector *VEMS sticker - Color 9-pack The following items have been ordered from Newark and/or Mouser (significant cost savings over VEMS Webshop): *IRGB14C40LPBF - Ignition driver FET, 3pcs (2 for board, 1 spare) *MPXH6400AC6U - 400kpa MAP sensor, 2pcs (1 for MAP, 1 for exhaust backpressure) *RH0506R000FE02 - 6R 50W power resistor, 5pcs *FQPF20N06L - Injector driver, 8pcs *TPIC8101DW - Knock sensor interface, 1pcs A 20x4 HD44780 LCD and MAP sensor mounting boards were also purchased from SparkFun.com I have decided to purchase the un-assembled GenBoard for a few reasons: I'm doing this as much for the learning experience as for the VEMS feature-set. If I wanted a 'plug-and-play' system I would buy a Haltech or Motec. A more minor motivator is the lower price. ---- '''Sections:''' (most of these are incomplete, will continue to add info and break into sections as time permits) Assembly, testing, and installation: MembersPage/KarlBuchka/Installation Crank and cam sensors/settings MembersPage/KarlBuchka/Trigger Sensors and inputs MembersPage/KarlBuchka/Sensors Fuel (Injectors, VE, lambda, enrichments) MembersPage/KarlBuchka/Fuel Spark (Coils, Spark advance) MembersPage/KarlBuchka/Spark Outputs/ancillaries MembersPage/KarlBuchka/Outputs (Fan control, boost control, shift light) Optional: Add document to category: Wiki formatting: * is Bullet list ** Bullet list subentry ...
